Identification of faults with seismic hazard potential based on morphotectonic analysis, Kerman city (Southeastern Iran)

The morphotectonic analysis is a useful time-saving and cost-effective method to assess tectonic activity, especially in large regions. In this paper, the study was carried out Kerman city which southeast of Iran part Central structural zone. Despite occurrence numerous historical instrumental earthquakes around city, there gap earthquake records that has obscured its seismicity status. aim identify active faults associated seismic hazard city. For purpose, seven geomorphic indices namely stream length-gradient index (SL), drainage basin asymmetry (Af), hypsometric integral (Hi), ratio valley-floor width valley height (Vf), shape (Bs), mountain front sinuosity (Smf) Transverse Topographic Symmetry Factor (T) were examined for 51 basins area, using digital elevation model (DEM) geological maps GIS environment. Then, two kinds relative activity calculated each basin, i.e., Iat Iat_T, from combination these indices. Iat_T chosen because results show better agreement with geology region. Finally, area divided into three regions according values. analyses indicate Kuhbanan fault system, southern splays, potential produce serious hazards future; Mahan-Jupar fault-related folds, tip Jorjafk fault, probable Zangi-Abad, Rafsanjan-Zarand Gowk are considered as other threats Furthermore, reveals reliable tool evaluate capability determine types, therefore estimate seismotectonic hazard.
